MEDFORD, Mass. - The Trinity College softball team defeated the Hamilton College Continentals, 6-3, in its opening round game of the NESCAC Championship at Spicer Field on the campus of Tufts University.

The Bantams, who were the No. 3 seed in the East Division, improved to 19-13 overall record.

Trinity took a 1-0 lead against Hamilton and held on the rest of the way despite a late rally bid from the Continentals. Sophomore Samantha Witmer got things going with an RBI-single in the third that scored sophomore Gillian Birk.

The Bantams scored three runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Jenna Thomas, to go ahead 4-0. Hamilton responded with a run in the home half of the fifth thanks to an RBI-double from Courtney Cardea to cut the deficit to three.

Sophomore Cassidy Schiff brought home a pair of runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly that turned into a Continental error, stretching Trinity's lead to 6-1.

Hamilton tried mounting a comeback in the bottom of the seventh but Bantam rookie Jordan Stephan finished the job in the circle and held on for the 6-3 win. Cardea singled home a run before a double from Emily Fraser made it 6-3. Stephan struck out the final batter of the game, leaving the bases loaded to seal the victory.

Trinity advanced to face Tufts in Game 5 of the NESCAC Championship.
