Meet Nate Merchant - Bates Men's Soccer
Nate Merchant of Los Angeles, California was named a United Soccer Coaches' NCAA Division III Men's Scholar All-America Second Team forward. A rhetoric major at Bates, Merchant maintained a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and was a two-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree.
For Merchant's senior thesis, he investigated portrayals of artificial intelligence in film, specifically in their representation of gender, and how it might influence perceptions of AI in our own future. His plan following graduation is to work in film and entertainment in his hometown of Los Angeles.
Merchant led Bates in both goals (6) and assists (6), for the second straight season in 2017. Merchant played in 53 matches at for the Bobcats, including 46 starts. Over his career, Merchant totaled 18 goals and 11 assists.
This fall, Merchant earned All-NESCAC First Team honors, becoming the men's soccer team's first All-NESCAC selection since both Terence O'Connell and David Shear earned the honor in 2005. He also earned a spot on the NCAA Division III All-New England Region Second Team.
Merchant's awards came on the heels of Bates' 8-6-2 season, which featured the Bobcats' most victories -- both overall and in conference play -- since 2008, as well as their first berth in the NESCAC Championship tournament since 2010.
