MEDFORD, Mass. - On Friday, February 1, the Tufts men's ice hockey team will host a Team IMPACT Awareness event at Valley Forum during its game against Connecticut College starting at 7 pm.

Tufts will be celebrating its strong relationship with Team IMPACT – the outstanding non-profit founded by Jumbo alums that work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by pairing them with collegiate athletic teams.

Team IMPACT gear will be on sale at the rink, and among the activities planned are a ceremonial puck drop, a 50/50 raffle to support Team IMPACT and between-periods fun such as a hockey equipment relay race and long shot contest for prizes.

Friends as students at Tufts in the late 1980s, Jay Calnan, Kris Herman, Dan Kraft, Robert Tishman, and Dan Walsh helped found Team IMPACT. Since 2011, 11 Tufts athletic teams have been matched with a Team IMPACT teammate.

Children are "drafted" onto college teams and become an official member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation. The child joins the athletic team and the student-athletes join the child's support team. The child gains great strength, camaraderie, and support and the student-athletes are taught lessons about courage, resiliency and life perspective that they can't learn in a classroom.

Several of the Tufts' Team IMPACT teammates will be in attendance at the game including Baseball's Cooper Martin, Women's Soccer's Emily Matarese, and Women's Lacrosse's Grace Zinck. The Connecticut College hockey program's Team IMPACT teammate John Anthony will be there, as will Southern New Hampshire University hockey teammate Cohl Capparelli.

On the ice, Tufts will be looking to earn some important NESCAC points towards qualifying for the conference tournament coming up in late February.

Valley Forum is located at 50 Holden Street in Malden, Mass. Admission to Jumbo games is free.
