LEWISTON, Maine – Middlebury first year Lok-Sze Leung (Hong Kong) captured the singles title at the USTA/ITA Division III Women's New England Regional Championship on Sunday, while sophomore Jordan Brewer (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and senior Laura Danzig (Allendale, N.Y.) of Amherst captured the 2011 USTA/ITA New England Regional Doubles Championship as the three-day tournament concluded at Bates College.
Leung native routed Nancy Worley of
Williams in Sunday afternoon's final, 6-0, 6-1. Leung now advances
to play in the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, Oct.
13-16 in Mobile, Ala.
Leung, the fourth seed at the tournament's outset, got past
Middlebury teammate Leah Kepping in Sunday morning's semifinal
round, 6-1, 6-4. Worley also defeated a teammate, unseeded Williams
first-year Maria Pylypiv, 6-2, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
Seeded second, the Lord Jeff duo of
Brewer and Danzing opened play with a hard-fought 9-7 win over
Wellesley’s Marie Watanabe and Sojung Lee. Brewer and Danzig
would then defeat Williams’ Maria Pylypiv and Monica Pastor
8-4 before upending Tufts’ Lindsay Katz and Shelci Bowman by
the same score.
With a berth in the championship match on the line, the Lord Jeffs
bore down, edging out Middlebury’s Lok-Sze Leung and Sally
Wilkey 9-7 to set up a showdown with the Ephs’ Nancy Worley
and Kara Shoemaker. Having already defeated Williams’ pairing
8-4 in a dual match earlier this season, Brewer and Danzig finished
strong, scoring an 8-5 decision over Worley and Shoemaker to claim
the 2011 doubles title.
