Nine From NESCAC Named All-America in Women's Tennis
HADLEY, Mass. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced the All-America honorees for the 2012-12 season with nine women's tennis players from four different NESCAC teams earning honors.
Six of the nine honored by the ITA earned All-America for the second year in a row. Williams senior Kristen Alotta garnered All-America for the third consecutive spring. She was honored earlier by the ITA as the Senior Player of the Year.
Alotta helped the Ephs secure their fifth consecutive NCAA crown this past May. Joining her from Williams on the All-America squad was Kara Shoemaker, as both received recognition for their singles play.
NESCAC champion Amherst had three individuals come away with All-America plaudits. Returning from last year were Gabby Devlin and Jordan Brewer, while the Lord Jeffs' Laura Danzig, who partnered with Devlin to win the NCAA doubles title, earned All-America for the second time in her career after coming away with recognition in 2010. Devlin was recognized for her singles and doubles play.
Middlebury also had three representives receive All-America recognition. NESCAC Player and Rookie of the Year Lok-Sze Leung took home her first All-America honor. Leung, who won the ITA/National Small College Singles title in the fall and finished as the runner-up in the NCAA singles championship this spring, was also recognized by the ITA as Rookie of the Year. Doubles partners Leah Kepping and Brittany Faber claimed All-America for the second-straight season, with Kepping earning All-America for her singles and doubles play.
Rounding out the NESCAC representatives on the ITA All-America team was Bowdoin's Kellen Alberstone, who earned repeat honors. Of the nine recognized by the ITA, eight were on the All-NESCAC First Team, including Alberstone.
Middlebury head coach Mike Morgan received individual honors, as he was selected as the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year.
In order to be recognized by the ITA as All-America, a player must meet the following criteria: singles players must be a top eight seed in the NCAA singles tournament, or win one round at the NCAA singles tournament, or finish in the top 20 in the final ITA rankings, or win the ITA Fall Regional tournament, or win first-round match at the ITA National Small College Championships; doulbes players must be among the top four seeds in the NCAA doubles tournament, or win one round at the NCAA doubles tournament, or finish in the top 10 in the final ITA rankings, or win ITA Fall Regional tournament, or win a first round match at the ITA National Small College Championships.
