CARY, N.C. – Middlebury first year sensation Lok-Sze Leung (Hong Kong) will have the opportunity to walk away with the national singles championship on Saturday morning at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
Leung, the NESCAC Player and Rookie of the Year, had two strong performances on Friday during the quarterfinals and semifinals of the NCAA women's tennis singles tournament. Leung cruised past Williams' Kristin Alotta, 6-0, 6-1, before earning a berth in Saturday's final with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Mackenzie Knoop from Trinity (Texas).
Leung, who earlier this season came away with the ITA National Small College singles crown, will look to become the second player from the conference in the past three years to win the individual singles title when she faces sophomore Gabrielle Clark of Emory. Clark earned victories over Sonja Meighan of Washington & Lee in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-5, before coming from behind to take down Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the semifinals.
During last year's singles tournament, Clark fell to Alotta in the quarterfinals.
In other singles action on Friday, Amherst's Laura Danzing suffered a heartbreaking end to her tournament run in the quarterfinals. Danzig fell to Knoop from Trinity (Texas) in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, as she held a 5-3 lead in the decisive third set before faltering.
In the doubles portion of the individual championship, Danzig and partner Gabby Devlin will appear in the semifinals following a straight-set victory against Laura Chen and Courtney Chin from Carnegie Mellon, 6-2, 6-3. The Lord Jeffs' Devlin won the 2011 NCAA doubles title along with teammate Jordan Brewer.
Danzig and Devlin will meet the winner of the match between Kristin Lim/Jessie Huang from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Kalla Shaefer/Alexandra Bayliss of Wis.-Whitewater.
