Four Singles, Two Doubles Teams Advance in NCAA Women's Tennis Individual Tournament

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Four singles players and two doubles teams from NESCAC institutions are still alive in the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis individual championship, being held at Mary Washington. Quarterfinal action for the singles and doubles tournaments begins on Saturday morning, with the individual championships wrapping up on Sunday, May 30.
Two-time NESCAC Player of the Year Julia Browne of Tufts won her first two matches in straight sets, downing Natalia Agarycheva of Willamette 6-1, 6-1, and Courtney Chin of Carnegie Mellon, 6-4, 6-1. Browne teamed up with Meghan McCooey to win an opening round doubles match against Lauren Caire and Ellen Yeatman from Washington & Lee, 6-3, 6-1.
Williams senior Grace Baljon and sophomore Kristin Alotta also advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals. Baljon downed Katie Griffith of Trinity (Tex.) in the first round 6-1, 6-2, then overcame Emory's Lorne McManigle, 7-5, 6-0. Alotta also won her two opening matches in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 over Jamie Solomon of Pomona Pitzer and 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 against Zahra Dawson of Emory. Baljon and her doubles partner, Taylor French, lost in straight sets to Kendra Higgins and Chrissy Hu of Chicago by carbon-copy 6-4 scores.
Senior Brittany Berckes of Amherst came away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Washington & Lee's Yeatman in her opening match, followed by a 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 win against Kendra Higgins of Chicago in the round of 16. Fellow Jeff Laura Danzig came up short in her first round match with Jennifer Kung of Chicago, falling in three sets 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6. Berckes and Danzig were winners in their doubles match, downing Liz Lewis and Kelley Fox of Chapman 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
