Trinity Falls to Babson in NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) totaled seven points on three goals and four assists to lead visiting Babson College to a 19-10 win over Trinity in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament Wednesday afternoon on Sheppard Field. Trinity closes the season with an 11-7 record, while the Beavers post a best-ever win total of 16 against just two losses with their fifth straight victory and their second triumph this spring over the Bantams.
Trinity freshman attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) opened the scoring 5:21 into the contest with a goal on a free position opportunity, but the Beavers scored the next three goals, including two by senior tri-captain midfielder Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.), and did not relinquish the lead after the 21:46 mark of the first half. Bantam freshman midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) cut the Beaver lead to 3-2 with 18:25 left in the first half, but Babson answered with another 3-0 run to increase their edge to 6-2 with 17:09 on the clock. Godfrey assisted on two of the three Babson scores during the run.
Irvine, Romanowsky, and fellow
rookie Christy Bradley (Wellesley, Mass.) scored goals late in the
first to pull Trinity within three at 9-6, but Martignetti and
sophomore midfielder Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.) tallied for
Babson to give the visitors an 11-6 advantage at the break. Trinity
senior captain attacker C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, Mass.) scored twice
in the first minute of the second stanza to cut the Beaver lead to
11-8, but Babson outscored the Bantams, 8-2, the rest of the
way.
Babson outshot Trinity, 33-26, and, 22-10, in the first half, and
Beaver freshman goalie Sarah Macary (Woodbury, Conn.) made eight of
her 10 saves in the second half. Trinity senior captain goalie
Michelle Smith (Wayland, Mass.) finished with seven stops, while
classmate Anne Cook (Washington, D.C.) totaled a game-high six draw
controls, and junior Lauren Peck (Newton, Mass.) paced the Bantams
with five ground balls.
Irvine led Trinity in scoring with four goals and two assists, while Yanofsky added three goals, and Romanowsky scored twice. Seven different players scored and all seven tallied at least two goals for Babson. Martignetti finished with four goals and one assist, and Beaver sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) had three goals and two assists and added six ground balls.
