BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team earned their first-ever trip to the NESCAC Semifinals with a 13-4 win over arch-rival Colby in the first-round on Sunday. The Polar Bears (11-6) break through after losing to the Mules in the first round in each of the past two seasons. The Mules finish their year with a mark of 7-9. Fourth-seeded Bowdoin advances to play at top-seeded Middlebury College next Saturday against the host Panthers. Gametimes will be announced next week.

After the squads traded early goals- Hilary Abrams for Bowdoin and Elizabeth Ghilardi for Colby- the Polar Bears took command with a 9-0 run. Angela King started the spurt with a goal at 23:43 before assisting on a Hilary Abrams tally at 22:52. Abrams then dished to Amanda Burrage for a goal at 19:49 to make it 4-1 Polar Bears. Shoshana Kuriloff and Colleen McDonald collected goals before Abrams scored again to make it 7-1 with 11:14 left in the half. Two goals from Kuriloff, sandwiched around another tally from Abrams gave Bowdoin a 10-1 lead with less than two minutes left in the frame. Libba Cox found the back of the net for Colby with 40 seconds remaining in the half to halt the run, making it 10-2 at intermission.

Bowdoin, who had scored just four goals in the early-season loss at Colby, scored three more in the second frame as Abrams scored her fifth of the contest and rookie Jill Steigerwald collected a pair. Abrams led Bowdoin with her five tallies to go with two assists, while Kuriloff finished with three goals and one assist. Cara Dionisi and Ghilardi added second-half goals for the Mules.

Kendall Cox stopped seven shots in the victory, while Colby's Catharine O'Brien made 13 stops.
