Colby Moves Past Bates in Women's Lacrosse First Round

WATERVILLE, Maine - Senior attacker Ally King (Hall/Hartford, Conn.) became Colby College's all-time leading scorer in women's lacrosse in helping the Mules take an 11-7 victory over Bowdoin College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Sunday at Crafts Field.
Colby, the fourth seed in the tournament, won for the 10th straight time in improving to 13-3 overall. Bowdoin, the fifth seed, ended the season at 9-6. The Mules will play a semifinal game at top-seeded Middlebury College this Saturday at either noon or 2:30 p.m. Amherst, the second seed, and third-seeded Williams will play in the other game. The title game is set for next Sunday at noon at Middlebury.
King, an All-American last year, finished the game with two goals and four assists. She now has 108 goals and 112 assists for 220 career points, passing the old record of 217 points by Margaret Mauran '91 (167 goals, 50 assists). King, already the all-time assist leader at Colby, had tied her own single-season record for assists at 39 coming into the game and now has 43. King got her milestone point when she had an assist on a goal by senior Lauren Gremelspacher (Loomis Chaffee/Granby, Conn.) with 1:57 left to halftime that gave the Mules a 7-3 lead at the break.
Colby opened up a 9-4 lead in the first 15 minutes of the second half on two goals by senior Amanda Epstein (Germantown/Philadelphia, Pa.), who finished with four goals and one assist. Cara Dionisi (St. Mark's/Sudbury, Mass.) added two goals and has 35 goals this year.
Hilary Abrams (Deerfield/Lakeville, Conn.) led Bowdoin with three goals. Colleen McDonald (Northfield-Mt. Hermon/Greenfield, Mass.) and Angela King (Bonny Eagle/Limington, Maine) both had one goal and one assist.
Colby goaltender Anna Schierberl Scherr (Berwick/Portsmouth, N.H.) stopped 14 shots. Bowdoin keeper Kendall Cox (Choate Rosemary Hall/Guilford, Conn.) had 10 stops.
