Colby Edges Tufts in Women's Lacrosse First Round on Last-Minute Goal

WATERVILLE, Maine - Marcia Ingraham scored the game winning goal with 37.9 seconds left to give the #4 seed White Mules a thrilling 14-13 win over Tufts here today at Crafts Field. The win advances Colby to the NESCAC semifinals to be played at Middlebury this Saturday and Sunday May 5-6. The first fifteen minutes of the affair was a back and forth struggle with both teams playing solid defense and neither team allowing any good scoring opportunities.
Tufts lit up the scoreboard first at 13:04 when Christina Orf passed to a cutting Liz Horowitz who shot it in the upper left corner for the goal. Colby came right back at 12:19 when Ally King had free positioning and fired a shot past the Tufts netminder to put Colby on the board. Colby jumped out to an early 3-1 lead as King used deft passing from the point to hit cutting Angela Pappas and Marcia Ingraham for goals.
The score at the half was 4-3, and the second half proved to be as hard fought as the first. Colby jumped out to an early 9-4 lead and looked to be in control, but Tufts came blazing back with five unanswered goals to tie the game up at 9-9 with 16:23 to go. Ally King scored an unassisted goal with 4:10 to go to give Colby a 13-12 lead, and the defense clinged to the one point lead as time winded down. Jen Gregorian, star of the game for Tufts with four goals, scored with 1:26 to go to tie up the game 13-13.
It looked like the match was headed to overtime until Ingraham received free position and blew the shot past the Tufts netminder for the win. Colby was led by Ally King who shined with four goals and four assists, Angela Pappas who had four goals and an assist, and Marcia Ingraham, who had three goals, including the game winner. Also, turning in stellar efforts to lead the Colby defense was Valerie Cooper, Emily Brooks, and Katie Trainor. Also starring for Tufts was Christina Orf with two goals and two assists.
