Day One Complete at NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

BEREA, Ohio – Day one is complete at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College, as a total of 10 individual titles were handed out in the first day of action. The Amherst men's team is in the lead among conference squads in 11th with seven points, while the Williams women have two points and sit in a tie for 25th place.

On the men's side, Tufts senior Jared Engelking is 11 in the decathlon with 3,494 total points after day one. Engelking's best performance came in the 400-meter dash, as he finished first with a time of 49.77.The decathlon resumes on Friday with the 110-high hurdles.

In the 1,500-meter run, Amherst junior Will Yochum has the second-fastest qualifying time at 3:50.77 heading into Saturday's final. Classmate Steve Corsello (3:51.07) and Williams junior Brian Cole is fifth (3:51.11) also qualified for the race.

Bates senior Rich McNeil, the 2010 NESCAC Most Outstanding Performer, placed fifth in the hammer with a toss of 59.0 meters. Amherst junior Thebe Tsatsimpe was eighth in the long jump (7.06 meters).

The 10,000-meter run featured top-five performances by a pair of NESCAC runners. Amherst senior Daniel Murner was third with a time of 30:25.22, while Tufts senior Jesse Faller was fifth in 30:37.75.

For the women, Bates senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan was ninth in the hammer with a throw of 51.94 meters.

The women's 1,500-meter run will feature two NESCAC runnres as sophomore Melissa Sullivan of Amherst and Emma Linhard of Colby both qualified for Saturday's final. Linhard posted a time of 4:35.17 to qualify, while Sullivan achieved a mark of 4:37.64.

Eph rookie Jennifer Gossels placed seventh in the women's 10,000-meter run. Her time of 36:30.83 was just under two minutes behind the winning time. Williams' 4x400-meter relay team has also qualified for Saturday's final, as the Ephs recorded a heat time of 3:49.46.
