WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams leads after day one of the 2010 NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship hosted at Williams College. The Ephs earned 740 points today, followed by Tufts (526), Amherst (484), Middlebury (340), and Connecticut College (316). The competition will resume tomorrow, Feb. 27, 2010 with trials at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Highlights of the day included a record-breaking win by Ben Wampler, Paul Dyrkacz, Andrew D’Ignazio, and Graham Righi of Williams in the 200 Freestyle Relay (3:27.19).

The Bowdoin sophomore tandem of Nathan Mecray and Mac Routh won titles, with Mecray taking the 50-yard breaststroke, while Routh edged Connecticut College senior Pat Troy for the 50-yard butterfly title by one-tenth of a second.

Amherst junior Alex Fraser set a pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.84, just ahead of sophomore teammate Ryan Lichtenfel. Fraser already owns the championship record in the 500 free, which he set last year.

Middlebury junior John Dillon took the first backstroke event of the weekend, edging out defending champion Tim Walsh of Connecticut College. Ben McBratney of Amherst beat the field in the 200-yard IM.

Wesleyan had a 1-2 finish in the 1-meter diving event, with J.P Balette taking first over G Galluzzo.

Middlebury won the final event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay. The Panthers edged the Lord Jeffs for the win by just over a second. Middlebury’s Schuyler Beeman, a member of the 400 medley squad, took first in the 50 yard free (20.68) earlier in the day.
