MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - After carrying a tenuous 52.5-point lead into the final day of the three-day 2009 NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Wesleyan University, Williams rolled away with its seventh consecutive team crown and eighth overall in the nine-year history of the event. Williams outpointed second place Tufts by a whopping 185 points over the final seven events completed Sunday to collect 1,775.5 points in total. Tufts, with 1538 points, was runner-up for the third time in the last four years. Amherst placed third with 1,364 points.
Leading the Ephs to victory was Swimmer of the Meet senior Norman Scott, who completed his sweep of the butterfly events with his third NESCAC meet record, covering the 200-yard fly in a time of 1:49.41. Also winning for a third time in individual events during the meet was Connecticut College freshman Tim Walsh as he won the 200-yard backstroke in NESCAC meet record of 1:50.06 to go along with his earlier wins in the 50 and 100 back.
Amherst sophomore Alex Fraser made it three wins in the freestyle when he captured the 100-yard event. He had previous taken both the 200 and 500 free. The three remaining individual winners on Sunday each won for the second time over the weekend. Diver of the Meet Kai Robinson, a senior from Amherst, won the three-meter event to complement his one-meet win on Friday. Amherst freshman Ryan Lichtenfels was clocked in 15:29.99, setting a NESCAC, NESCAC meet and Wesleyan pool record. Lichtenfels was the 400 individual medley winner on Saturday.
Williams senior Tyler Bonewell, who received the Senior Swimmer of the Year Award as the senior with the most points accumulated over four years at the NESCAC Championships, added the 200-yard breaststroke title to his list of credits. He was triumphant in the 100 breast on Saturday.
Amherst ended the meet with its second win in the relays, coming out ahead in the 400-yard freestyle relay by setting a NESCAC, NESCAC meet and Wesleyan pool record with a time of 3:01.89. Surprisingly the time was still almost a full second above the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III meet.
Additional award winners were Wesleyan senior Dave Wilkinson as the Four-Year High-Point Diver, Amherst’s Mary Ellen Clark as Diving Coach of the Year and Williams’ Steve Kuster as Swimming Coach of the Year.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Six-time defending NESCAC champion Williams College made up a 66-point deficit to Tufts after the first day of the three-day NESCAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships at Wesleyan University to take over the team lead with 1190.5 points, 51.5 points ahead of second-place Tufts with 1,138.5. Amherst College is a distant third with 958 points.
Williams swimmers won three individual events during the evening. In total, Eph mermen captured 14 top-eight finishes during the six individual events completed. Amherst had nine score in the top eight of an event while Tufts had eight. Tufts also won its first-ever relay event, securing first place in the evening’s opening event, the 200-yard medley relay. The jumbos had come up empty as far as relay titles were concerned during the first eight NESCAC Championships. Amherst came away the winner in the final event of the night, the grueling 800-yard freestyle relay, doing so in a NESCAC, NESCAC meet and Wesleyan pool record time of 6:42.39. Tufts relay win had the same characteristics with its time of 1:31.04. The Jumbos had the only automatic NCAA qualifying time by a relay squad during day two.
Three individuals won their second event of the championships. Winning the 100-yard butterfly in NESCAC-record time was Williams senior Norman Scott (:48.89). He had won the 50 fly on Friday. Connecticut College freshman Tim Walsh added the 100-yard backstroke title to his 50 back crown from yesterday. His winning time was :50.32. Amherst senior Alex Fraser, who anchored the 800 free relay win, took the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:38.35 performance. He was victorious in the 500 free on Friday.
Other winners on the day included Williams sophomore Gary Roberson, who successfully defended his title in the 1000-yard freestyle; Amherst freshman Ryan Lichtenfels in the 400-yard individual medley; and Williams senior Tyler Bonewell in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bonewell had won all three breaststroke events a year ago at the championships but yielded the 50 breast title to Tufts senior James Longhurst yesterday. This time Longhurst was third.
A noteworthy effort was logged by Middlebury senior Kevin O’Rourke who placed second in the 200-yard freestyle. After winning both the 200 and 500 free during the 2008 Championships, O’Rourke slipped to fifth in the 500 free on Friday but today posted a 1:38.22 clocking during the trials to set NESCAC, NESCAC meet and Wesleyan pool standards while qualifying automatically for Nationals. His time in the finals was 1:39.47.
Action in the Championships concludes on Sunday with the final seven events decided to declare a team champion.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Despite winning just one event, Tufts University used its team depth to gain the scoring lead after the first day of the 2009 NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Wesleyan University. Tufts has 618 while defending team champ Williams found itself in unusual territory, standing in second place, 66 points behind Tufts with a 552 total.
Amherst is currently third at 486.5. Williams has won seven of the eight previous NESCAC titles and has outpointed the conference each of the last six meets.
The only victor for the Jumbos during the nine events completed on the first day of competition was senior James Longhurst in the 50-yard breaststroke. His winning time of :25.82 was a NESCAC, NESCAC meet and Wesleyan Natatorium pool record and gave him a comfortable .52 second margin of victory over defending champ senior Tyler Bonewell of Williams.
Another Williams senior, Norman Scott, rewrote the book on the 50-yard butterfly, covering the event in a NESCAC record, NESCAC meet record and Wesleyan Natatorium pool standard :21.97. He won his fourth straight 50 fly title in the NESCAC Championships as he looks to sweep the fly events over the three days. His :47.90 split during Williams’ win in the 400-yard medley relay was more than a second faster the current NESCAC record for the 100-yard butterfly, boding well for his effort in that event on Saturday. The Williams 400 medley relay also set NESCAC, NESCAC meet and Wesleyan pool records with its 3:22.10 clocking.
Another individual standout finish on the first day came from Amherst sophomore Alex Fraser, who won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:27.36. That qualified him automatically for the NCAA Division III Championships, one of three finishers in the race to do so. Also performing well for Amherst was defending one-meter diving champ senior Kai Robinson, whose 527.75 score allowed him to repeat as titlist and was just .65 off the NESCAC record of 528.40, and freshman Bart Federak, who captured the 200-yard individual medley.
Connecticut College stalwarts, freshman Tim Walsh and junior Grant Moryan, both won events and helped the Camels 200-yard freestyle relay open the meet with a victory. Walsh took the 50-yard backstroke while Moryan won the 50-yard freestyle.
