Todhunter of Williams, K. Stern of Amherst Take Titles During Day Two of NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Williams first year Logan Todhunter and Amherst sophomore Kendra Stern claimed individual honors on Thursday during day two of the 2009 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Todhunter set the record in the 100-yard Butterfly (53.54) while Stern repeated in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:47.67). Joining Kendra in the 200-yard Free final was sister Meaghan, as she placed third with a time of 1:50.32.
Kenyon is holding off Emory, Denison and Williams for the top spot in the women’s team standings. The Ladies picked up their third and fourth first-place finishes on the meet Thursday and have 309 team points. Emory is in the runner-up position with 246, followed by Denison with 233 and Williams with 214½.
Kenyon’s men won three events to bring its two-day total to five and with 358½ team points, leads by a more comfortable margin over Emory (221), Denison (160) and St. Olaf (150) in its bid for a 30th national title in a row.
Other results from the four-day championship include Williams and Amherst placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's 200-yard Freestyle. The Ephs finished the event in 1:34.65, while the Jeffs posted a time of 1:35.17. In the men's 200-yard Freestyle, Connecticut College came in sixth with a time of 1:21.73.
In the women's 400-yard IM, Amanda Nicholson from Williams was the runner-up to Emory's Liz Horvat, finishing just over a second behind the top time with a 4:17.24 showing. Eph first year teammate Bonnie Patchen was sixth in the event (4:26.80).
Williams senior Norman Scott was the only NESCAC swimmer to place among the top eight in the 100-yard Butterfly, recording a time of 48.53.
Amherst sophomore Alex Fraser, a champion during day one in the 500-yard Freestyle, came in second in the 200-yard Freestyle on Thursday at 1:37.48, just under three-tenths of a second off the winning time.
Lord Jeff senior Kai Robinson claimed fourth in the 1-meter Diving event, posting a score of 494.30.
The Williams women's 400-yard Medley Relay team placed fourth in the final event of the day.
Action at the 2009 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships resumes on Friday.
