MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Williams College captured its fourth straight NESCAC women's swimming and diving title with a winning margin of 232.5 points over second place Middlebury. The Ephs were paced by junior Jessica Yankura, who won her second event of the meet on Sunday setting a championship meet record in the 200-yard backstroke, and senior Meredith Olson who was honored with the Four Year High-Point Swimming Award given to the swimmer who accumulates the most points over her four-year career.
Connecticut College's Kate Kovenock was honored as the 2004 Swimmer of the Meet. The junior freestyle sprinter was the meet's only three-event victor setting meet records as she captured the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Kovenock's won the 100-yard event on Sunday in a time of :51.34 besting the field by 1.22 seconds.
Williams senior Rachel Gealy, who finished second in the three-meter springboard on Sunday after winning the one-meter event on Friday, was named the 2004 Diver of the Meet. Amherst junior Kate Shaw won the three-meter after placing seventh in the one-meter competition on Friday. Gealy also earned the Four Year High-Point Diver Award.
The Williams coaching staff took home both coaches awards as Steve Kuster was named Swimming Coach of the Year and Kit Callahan Koch was honored as the Diving Coach of the Year.
In addition to Kovenock's meet record on Sunday, Bates junior Vanessa Williamson eclipsed her own meet record in the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:03.75 effort and the Middlebury 400-yard freestyle relay bettered the meet mark with a 3:30.82 performance.
Hamilton junior Brittany Achin took the 200-yard breaststroke, adding to her 100-yard crown.
Williams Leads After Day Two at Women's Swimming & Diving Championship

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - With each individual winner qualifying automatically for the NCAA Division III Championships, eight events (seven of them NCAA events) were decided today at the NESCAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Wesleyan.
Highlighting the evening was Connecticut College junior Kate Kovenock as she won her second event of the meet by capturing the 200-yard freestyle in a meet-record time of 1:52.60. Yesterday she was victorious the 50-yard freestyle event.
Also winning her second event of the meet was Tufts senior Mika Sumiyoshi, who took the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:31.33 time. The top four finishers in the event all qualified automatically for the NCAA Championships. On Friday, Sumiyoshi won the 200 individual medley breaking a meet record.
Colby junior Laura Miller was another two-time winner as she placed first in the 100-yard butterfly after winning the 50-yard butterfly on Friday. Her winning time of :57.04 was slightly higher than her preliminary time of :56.83, which broke the NESCAC meet record. Her victory by .04 seconds over Vanessa Williamson, a junior from Bates, was the evening's closest individual decision. The 400-yard medley relay came down to a .02 difference between winner Amherst and runner-up Middlebury.
Williams continues to lead in the team points with 1,234.5, followed by Middlebury in second (1,038) and Amherst in third (871). The meet concludes Sunday with seven events being decided.
Three Records Fall During Day One of Women's Swimming & Diving Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Three NESCAC records were broken in a competitive first day at the 2004 NESCAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships being held at Wesleyan University this weekend.
Colby junior Laura Miller broke her own conference and meet record in the 50-yard butterfly during trials on Friday morning completing the distance in :25.31 seconds. Miller won the event with a time of :25.54 seconds.
Kate Kovenock, a junior all-American from Connecticut College, broke her own meet record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of :23.57 seconds on Friday morning. Kovenock won the event for the third consecutive season swimming just off her record pace to win the event in a time of :23.60 seconds.
Tufts senior Mika Sumiyoshi finished the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.96 to break the meet record.
Two first-year athletes earned conference titles. Ali Wilson of Connecticut College won the 500-yard freestyle and Williams’ Krista Nylen claimed the 50-yard backstroke crown. Other winners on Friday included Middlebury senior Taylor Bolz in the 50-yard breaststroke and Williams’ Rachel Gealy in the 1-meter springboard diving competition.
Following day one, Williams leads the pack with 631.5 points trailed closely by Middlebury (567), Amherst (459), Hamilton (356) and Tufts (345).
