Williams Repeats as Men's Swimming & Diving Champions

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Williams College men's swimming and diving team captured their third NESCAC Championship in the last four years, holding off rival Amherst to win the title. The Ephs totaled 1732.5 points, while the Jeffs scored 1407. Tufts took third place overall (1290), followed by Middlebury (1219.5). Host Bowdoin took seventh spot overall (544).

On Friday, The Hamilton College 200-yard freestyle relay team of Aran Lawrence, Kevin Thompson, Andrew Fink and Andrew Saunder captured the first final of the day, winning the event in 1:23.67 and reaching the "B" qualifying standard for NCAA's. Although Williams was leading the competition, the Lord Jeffs of Amherst dominated the individual competitions with several winners on day one. Amherst's John Ancona won the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.71. The Jeffs also got individual wins from Bryan Woo in the 50-butterfly, who set the Greason Pool record with a time of 23.22 and Rick Estacio also set a pool record with his victorious time in the 50-backstoke (23.79). The most impressive Amherst win, however, came from Ethan Treat, who set a NESCAC Meet record and automatically qualified for Nationals with his time of 1:52.04 in the 200-yard IM. The Jeffs closed out day one with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, with a meet-record 3:23.75 from Estacio, Woo, Mike Pohorylo and Charles Clinton.

Hamilton had two other individual champions on the first day; diver Mike Salmon set a NESCAC meet record with his score of 497.70 in the 1-meter diving event, while Aran Lawrene followed up his relay win with a victory in the 50-free (21.16). Williams' sole winner on day one was Chris Vollmond-Carstens, who took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.13.

In competition on Saturday, winners included Amherst's 200-yard medley relay squad of Rick Estacio, Bryan Woo, Mike Pohorylo and Charles Clinton, setting a NESCAC record in 1:33.10. Chris Vollmond-Carstens captured the 1,000-yard freestyle in a pool record mark of 9:29.95. Amherst's Ethan Treat set a NESCAC record in the 400-yard IM (3:58.99), while Williams' Nick Pepe won the 100-yard butterfly in a meet-record 50.62. Williams also claimed the 200-yard free as Will Cunningham won the event in 1:43.33 while the Jeffs took the 100-yard breaststroke in a NESCAC record 56.62. Cunningham also took the 100-yard breaststroke in a NESCAC record 50.52 and anchored the Eph's 800-yard free relay team of Vollmond-Carstens, Steve Spinelli and Brad Brecher in a meet-record time of 6:50.21.

Vollmond-Carstens continued to dominate the distance events on Sunday, winning the 1650 freestyle in 15:51.51. Middlebury's Rob Collier set a pool record in the 200 backstroke, winning in 1:54.44. Brecher won the 100-freestyle for Williams in 46.89, while Pohorylo set a NESCAC mark in the 200-breaststroke (2:02.17). Bowdoin's Roger Burleigh set a NESCAC record in the 200-yard butterfly event, winning in 1:51.74 for the host Polar Bears, while MIke Salmon captured the last individual title of the competition by winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 472.6. The competition closed with the 4x400 yard relay, won by the champions- Williams' team of Cunningham, Brecher, Nick Gallucci and Zack Orjuela in a meet-record time of 3:04.73.

Williams Leads Following Day One at Men's Swimming & Diving Championships
