Tufts Powers Past Trinity, 11-1, in Game 4 of Softball Championship

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - In Game 4 of the 2008 NESCAC Softball Championship, defending NESCAC champ Tufts made short work of Trinity as the Jumbos raced out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and behind the two-hit pitching of junior Lauren Gelmetti, gave up just one run before closing out the victory in six innings, 11-1.
RBI singles by sophomore Christy Tinker, senior Danielle Lopez and senior Megan Cusick gave the Jumbos all the runs they needed in the 1st inning. Cusick added a two-run home run in the 3rd inning as one of six Tufts players with a multiple-hit game. T
ufts gathered 17 hits in total, three each by junior Samantha Kuhles and junior Laura Chapman. Tufts sent 10 players to the plate in the 6th inning to score four runs and end the game an inning early due to the eight-run rule. Sophomore Jenna Robey had a two-run single and junior Roni Herbst and Kuhles each drove in a run as well in the 7th.
The loss put Trinity in an elimination game vs. Wesleyan, the team it beat 7-0 on the opening day, while Tufts became the 2-0 squad, awaiting the final outcome of the elimination rounds.
