2004 Softball Players of the Week

Clara Hard, Williams
(Sophomore, Pitcher - Seattle, Wash.)
Hard threw 19 innings, winning two games in the NESCAC Championship as Williams claimed their first-ever title. Hard struck out seven and allowed just one hit in a 1-0 defeat of Tufts in the first game of the tournament. The sophomore lasted 12 innings in a 2-1 victory over Bowdoin, yielding just three hits and one earned run while totaling eight strikeouts.

Liz Gluck, Williams
(Junior, Pitcher/OF - LaGrange, N.Y.)
Gluck was 10 for 18 at the plate (.556) with five RBI, four runs scored, a double and a home run. In addition, the sophomore threw three complete game shutouts as Williams defeated Keene State, Mass. College and Amherst. On the week, Gluck posted a 0.00 ERA with 11 strikeouts, allowing just three walks and hold batters to just .187 at the plate.

Emily Nelson, Bowdoin
(First Year, Pitcher - Pasadena, Calif.)
Nelson, who went 3-0 last week, collected 17 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched, eclipsed the school's single-season K-mark with 92 and allowed just eight hits and two runs all week, including just one walk. She came within one out of tossing a no-hitter against St. Joseph's on Saturday and also batted .400 for the week with a double.

In three appearances, Hard earned two wins and a save for Williams last week. The sophomore threw a no hitter in must-win conference game against Wesleyan, just one walk away from a perfect game. Hard picked up a save and a win against regionally-ranked Rensselaer. For the week she threw 15 innings allowing a total of four hits, all singles, with zero runs, 12 strike outs and one walk for a 0.00 ERA.

Hard threw three complete games as Williams went 6-0 last week. The sophomore tallied 33 strikeouts and allowed just five hits and no earned runs while yielding just two walks in 19 innings, holding opponents to a .077 batting average.

Megan McCarthy, Middlebury
(Junior, Pitcher/3B - Winter Springs, Fla.)
Megan McCarthy threw 11 shutout innings, striking out five batters and allowing just four hits in a 1-0 road win for Middlebury at Williams. She is now 5-2 on the year with a 0.88 ERA.

Molly Gaebe, Wesleyan
(Freshman, Pitcher - Miami, Florida)
Pitching 18.2 innings over three games for Wesleyan, Gaebe allowed just seven hits and one unearned run with 28 strikeouts as the Cardinals went 2-1. Gaebe posted a one-hit, 13-strikeout performance leading Wesleyan to a 3-0 win over Hamilton to open conference play. In the second game against the Continentals with Wesleyan trailing 6-0 in the third inning, Gaebe shut the door for 4.2 innings allowing just one hit with seven Ks as Wesleyan rallied for a 7-6 win. The freshman has already exceeded the team record for strikeouts in a season with 108 thus far in 78 IP and leads the conference with a 0.45 ERA.
