2002 Softball All-Conference Teams Announced
Mackey and Moreau of Tufts Earn Top Honors
HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior shortstop Jen Mackey and senior pitcher Jodie Moreau of conference champion Tufts were named the 2002 NESCAC Softball Player of the Year and 2002 NESCAC Softball Pitcher of the Year, respectively.
Mackey, a repeat first-team selection, led the conference in hitting with a .471 average with league-best totals of 49 hits and 38 runs. Moreau went 3-0 in the NESCAC championship tournament to give her a 19-1 record and 0.52 earned run average. A second-team All-American, Moreau yielded just 73 hits in over 123 innings, with 13 walks and 111 strikeouts.
Three other Tufts players were named to the first team. Junior catcher Lis Drake earned all-conference first team honors for the third consecutive year after hitting .343 with nine home runs and 36 runs batted in. Senior first baseman Tiffany Trahan was named to the first team for the second year in a row. She hit .353 with six home runs and 34 runs batted in. Sophomore outfielder Julie Fox earned first-team accolades after hitting .364 with 32 runs batted in.
Kristie Miller of Bowdoin and Lauren Peloquin of Amherst were repeat first-team selections. Miller, a senior first baseman, hit .398, while Peloquin posted a 1.87 earned run average while striking out 165 hitters in 165 innings. Miller helped lead the Polar Bears to a spot in the NESCAC tournament. Peloquin, the 2001 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year, led the Jeffs into the conference championship tournament.
Juniors Katharine Baldwin and Kristin Massimiano of conference runner-up Williams earned first-team All-NESCAC honors. Baldwin finished 13-9 with a 1.80 earned run average on the mound and also played first base, hitting .358 for the season. Massimiano, a centerfielder, hit .351.
Rounding out the first team were sophomore first baseman Gina Scribner of Amherst and junior outfielder Kristi Royer of Bowdoin. Scribner led the Jeffs with a .406 batting average, including 10 doubles. Royer hit .396 in 35 games for the Polar Bears.
First-year outfielder Courtney Bongiolatti of Tufts was named the 2002 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. She batted .397 with five home runs, 10 doubles, and 23 runs scored. Tufts Head Coach Kris Talon was named NESCAC Softball Coach of the Year for leading the Jumbos to their second consecutive conference title and sixth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championship tournament.
