AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's tennis team punched its ticket to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals with a dominant 5-0 win over Vassar College on Sunday.
Amherst (31-2) increased its win streak to 16 matches by defeating Vassar for the second time of the season, as the Lord Jeffs earned a victory in the regional finals for the fourth consecutive year. The Brewers close their season at 15-11 after picking up their first-ever NCAA tournament victory on Saturday.
The Lord Jeffs will take on either Washington-St. Louis or Gustavus Adolphus in the national quarterfinals on Monday, May 21. The final three rounds of the tournament and the individual championships will take place at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The top doubles bout featured a matchup of the two highest ranked pairs in the Northeast, but Amherst seniors Austin Chafetz and Luis Rattenhuber put in one of their best performances of the season en route to a dominant 8-0 win over Andrew Guzick and Ben Guzick. The Guzick brothers began the weekend ranked sixth nationally, but the Lord Jeff duo was zoned in and improved its record to 11-1.
Amherst was equally dominant in the second doubles flight, as Mark Kahan '13 and Andrew Jung '12 didn't surrender a single point to Dan Freeman and Josh Kessler. The Lord Jeffs nearly pulled off an incredible sweep without allowing a point in any doubles match, but Nick Jasso and Wilson Platt managed to get on the scoreboard during an 8-1 loss to Wes Waterman '12 and Chris Dale '14 at number three.
Jung made quick work of Platt with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fifth singles flight, and Rattenhuber soon followed by defeating Freeman at number three (6-2, 6-1). The Lord Jeffs were also on the verge of winning the second, fourth and sixth flights, while Kahan and Andrew Guzick were in the middle of a great battle between two of the best players in the region in the top spot.
More information about the final rounds of the NCAA Championship will be made available later in the week. A complete tournament bracket is available here.
