Amherst Outduels Williams 5-4 in Men's Tennis First Round

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Amherst advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 NESCAC Men's Tennis Championship after a 5-4 marathon win over Williams in a match played at Middlebury. The Jeffs will take on the host school in a semifinal contest on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The win for Amherst was its first over Williams since the spring of 1994.
Amherst led 2-1 after doubles play, increasing their lead to 3-1 before the Ephs tied the match at 3-3. The Jeffs took a 4-3 lead with a win by Jeff Wan at #3 singles, while Williams tied the match as Nick Lebedoff won his match at #2 singles over Michael Mintz, 6-4, 6-4.
The sixth and deciding singles match was moved inside due to darkness as Sean Doerfler of Amherst battled Karol Furmaga of Williams in the #5 singles slot. The lengthy match ended as Doerfler was able to pick up a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (1) victory.
