Men's Tennis All-Conference Team Announced
Orach of Trinity Named
Men's Tennis Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior Rosty Orach of Trinity was named the 2001 NESCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year. Orach entered the NESCAC Men's Tennis Championship at Williams as the top seed in first singles and did not drop a set in capturing the conference singles title. Richard Lawrence of Trinity was named the Rookie of the Year, and Paul Gastonguay of Bates earned Coach of the Year honors. Senior Owen Patrick of Colby received the Clarence Chaffee award, given annually to the player who best combined and displayed a high standard of tennis coupled with the highest levels of sportsmanship.
Orach and Lawrence teamed up to capture the first doubles title as they won all three of their matches in straight sets, dropping only nine games in the entire tournament. Lawrence also advanced to the championship match of second singles before falling to sophomore Nick MacLean of Bowdoin, who was seeded eighth in the second singles flight.
The All-NESCAC team was determined from action at the tournament. Each singles player who advanced to the semifinals of the first singles flight or the final of the second singles flight earned all-conference honors. In doubles, the two teams who advanced to the final of the first doubles flight and the winning duo in the second doubles flight garnered All-NESCAC honors.
Freshman David Ruttenberg of Tufts advanced to the first singles final, defeating two-time defending individual champion Josh Lefkowitz of Williams in the semifinals. Lefkowitz and junior Bryan Wexler of Amherst earned All-NESCAC accolades by reaching the semifinals of the first flight.
Lefkowitz and sophomore Toby Reigeluth advanced to the first doubles championship match and were joined on the all-conference team by their Williams teammates Andrew and Daniel Murray. The freshman twins won the second doubles flight in a three-set final.
