AMHERST, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Lennard Kovacs (Wolfersdorf, Germany) continued to add to his growing list of postseason accolades, earning recognition on the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Men's Soccer team for a second-straight year.
A second-team selection in 2010, Kovacs once again earned a spot on the second-team while carrying a 3.88 grade-point average as an economics and physics double major. To be considered for the award, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 and have outstanding athletic credentials
The lone NESCAC representative on this year's Academic All-America teams, Kovacs is one of 33 Division III student-athletes and just one of three goalkeepers nationwide to garner praise on the first, second or third team. The 24th Lord Jeff to capture Academic All-America laurels, Kovacs is the only member of the Amherst men's soccer program to earn the prestigious award and joins women's swimming alum Kendra Stern '11 as school's only two-time recipients.
Bursting onto the scene as a first-year in 2008, Kovacs recorded a 0.63 goals-against average and 0.838 save percentage en route to a 12-3-3 rookie campaign. Equally impressive in his second season, he posted a 12-4-1 mark with a 0.70 GAA and 0.853 save percentage before going 13-2-4 as a junior with a career-best, 0.59 goals-against. Kovacs wrapped up his decorated four-year career with a 15-2-2 slate during the 2011 season, ranking third in the conference in shutouts (8) with a 0.72 GAA and 0.818 save percentage.
Over the course of four seasons the Wolfersdorf, Germany native logged 6556:54 minutes in net, going 52-11-10 with a 0.66 goals-against average, 0.836 save percentage and 32 shutouts. During that span, Kovacs helped the Lord Jeffs capture a pair of NESCAC titles (2008, 2011), earn three berths into the NCAA Tournament round of 16 (2008, 2010, 2011) and the program's second trip to the national semifinal in 2008.
