2008 Men's Soccer Players of the Week

November 10, 2008
Jake Duker, Amherst
(Senior, Forward - Newton, Mass.)
Duker played a part in both goals during Amherst’s 2-0 victory over Middlebury on Sunday in the 2008 NESCAC Men’s Soccer Championship, the first conference crown for the Lord Jeffs. Duker tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 15th minute before assisting on an insurance marker in the 18th minute. He leads the league in both goals (13) and points (29) through 16 games.

Brian Bush, Middlebury
(Senior, Goalkeeper - Madison, Wis.)
Bush did not allow a goal in over 262 minutes of action last week as he led the Panthers to three shutout wins. Bush made eight total saves over the three outings, playing the full 90 minutes in net in 1-0 victories against Keene St. and at Williams and 82 minutes in the 3-0 Sunday quarterfinal win over Bowdoin. He now has eight shutouts this year and 21 over the past two seasons for the Panthers.

Patrick Jackson, Bates
(Sophomore, Midfielder - Durham, N.H.)
Jackson factored into all three of Bates goals in a crucial 3-2 victory over Wesleyan that kept the Bobcats’ postseason hopes alive. Jackson scored the first two goals of the game before assisting on what proved to be the game-winning goal. He leads his team in scoring this season with eight goals and two assists for 18 points.

Dan Marden, Colby
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Londonderry, N.H.)
Marden combined to make 12 saves as he posted back-to-back shutouts during a 1-0-1 NESCAC weekend for the Mules. On Saturday during a 1-0 victory over Connecticut College, Marden stopped five shots. He followed up the performance with seven saves on Sunday in a scoreless tie with Williams. Marden has played 407 minutes this season and has allowed just two goals while boasting a .923 save percentage.

Eddie Jones, Bowdoin
(Freshman, Forward - Scarborough, Maine)
Jones had a hand in all three goals as the Polar Bears earned a much-needed come-from-behind victory at Connecticut College on Saturday, 3-2. Down 2-0 late in the first half, Jones tallied Bowdoin’s first goal - his first collegiate goal - to cut the deficit to 2-1 entering the break. With less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Jones assisted on a one-touch score by Brendan Mooney before netting the game-winner two minutes later on a blast from 25 yards out.

Lennard Kovacs, Amherst
(Freshman, Goalkeeper - Wolfersdorf, Germany)
Kovacs posted a pair of shutouts last week, the first two of his collegiate career, and lowered his goals against average this season to 0.23 during the Lord Jeffs’ 2-0-0 week. After needing to make one save in Tuesday’s 1-0 overtime win against Springfield, Kovacs stopped six shots in a 3-0 decision over Tufts on Saturday.
   
Zachary Trudeau, Trinity
(Senior, Goalkeeper - Norwell, Mass.)
Trudeau made a season-high 11 saves and posted a shutout as the Bantams came away with a 1-0 win at nationally-ranked Williams on Saturday. The victory snapped a 20-game losing streak for Trinity at Williams.

Sam Wisner, Trinity
(Junior, Forward - Wayland, Mass.)
Wisner had a hand in six of the Bantams’ seven goals scored during a 2-0-0 week, scoring four and assisting on two more. Against Western Conn. St. on Wednesday, Wisner scored two goals and assisted on two more in a 4-1 victory. He added two more goals on Saturday in the Bantams’ 3-1 win at rival Wesleyan on Saturday, including the decisive goal. Wisner leads Trinity with six goals and five assists though six games so far this season.

Duker had five goals during a 2-0-0 week for Amherst, as the Lord Jeffs outscored opponents by a 13-1 margin. On Saturday afternoon against Bates, Duker had two goals in a 6-1 victory. He added three more goals on Sunday evening in a 7-0 shutout at Suffolk. Duker now has seven goals through the first four games of the season.

Josh Lyvers, Colby
(Freshman, Forward - Harvard, Mass.)
Lyvers scored the game-winning goal during Saturday’s match at Tufts with four seconds remaining in the second overtime, propelling the Mules to a 2-1 victory. He also assisted on the game’s first goal which put Colby up 1-0 early in the second half. Lyvers leads Colby in scoring through two games with two goals and an assist.

Sam Empson, Williams
(Senior, Midfielder - Washington, D.C.)
Empson netted five points on two goals and an assist during an 8-1 season-opening victory over Castleton on Saturday afternoon. All of Empson’s scoring came during the first half of the game. Empson was fourth for the Ephs in points during 2007, tallying four goals and adding two assists through 15 games.
