2005 Men's Soccer Players of the Week

November 7, 2005
Matt Nevin, Wesleyan
(Freshman, Forward - Montclair, N.J.)
The rookie Nevin scored two first half goals for Wesleyan in the NESCAC Championship against Amherst on Sunday to help lead the seventh-seeded Cardinals to their first-ever NESCAC title and a date with Muhlenburg in the first round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday. Nevin, who is currently in a three-way tie for team goal-scoring honors with six markers in 2005, finished the 2005 Men's Soccer Championship with three goals and one assist through three games.

Zack Toth, Middlebury
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Carlisle, Mass.)
Toth put together another impressive weekend for Middlebury, allowing no goals in 200 minutes of work. The junior made six saves in a scoreless tie at Trinity Saturday, followed by making three stops in a 1-0 victory over Tufts Sunday in first round action of the 2005 NESCAC Men's Soccer Championship.

Eric Wunsch, Trinity
(Junior, Goalkeeper - New York, N.Y.)
Wunsch did his part to keep Trinity in the game Saturday against Middlebury. The junior keeper made several spectacular saves on the afternoon, finishing the match with 16 as the Panthers and the Bantams drew to a scoreless tie.

October 24, 2005
Brent Morin, Bates
(Sophomore, Forward - Hanover, N.H.)
Morin had a hand in all six of Bates' goals last week, collecting four goals and two assists in a 1-1-0 week for the Bobcats. On Wednesday, Morin netted his first collegiate hat trick and added an assist as Bates defeated Plymouth State 4-2. Against Middlebury on Saturday, Morin tallied a goal and added an assist in a 4-2 loss. Morin currently leads the conference in goals this season with 11.

October 17, 2005
Mattia Chason, Tufts
(Junior, Forward - Rome, Italy)
Chason netted three goals during a 1-0-1 week for the Jumbos. On Wednesday at Plymouth State, Chason scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute to give the Jumbos a 1-1 tie. He followed the feat on Saturday in NESCAC action with two more goals against Trinity, scoring in the 71st minute to knot the contest at two and then collected the decisive goal one minute into overtime for a 3-2 victory. Chason is currently tied for second in the NESCAC in goals (7) and tied for third in points (16).

October 10, 2005
Patrick Huffer, Williams
(Junior, Forward - Boulder, Colo.)
In a 2-0 week for Williams in NESCAC action, Huffer had three goals. He scored the game's first goal at the 1:31 mark Saturday against Bates in a 3-1 Eph victory and followed the feat with two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-0 shutout of Colby on Sunday. Huffer currently leads Williams in goals (5) and points (12) through 10 outings.

October 3, 2005
Derek Cece, Middlebury
(Senior, Defense - Williamstown, Mass.)
Cece netted a goal in each contest over the weekend, as Middlebury earned two more shutouts in NESCAC action with victories over Colby Saturday (4-0) and Bowdoin on Sunday (3-0). Cece Continues to anchor a Panther defense that has not allowed a goal in its last 557:24 of action, dating back to the first game of the season against Connecticut College on Sept. 10 (3-1).

September 26, 2005
Terence O'Connell, Bates
(Senior, Forward - Greenwich, Conn.)
O'Connell tallied two goals and added an assist in a 2-0 week for Bates against NESCAC foes. On Saturday O'Connell netted the decisive goal in double overtime against Connecticut College, scoring on a direct kick in the 107th minute of play for a 2-1 Bobcat win. O'Connell followed the feat on Sunday with a goal and an assist in Bates' 4-1 victory over Trinity. Through the two contests, O'Connell took a total of nine shots.

September 19, 2005
Morgan Owen, Wesleyan
(Junior, Forward - Bozeman, Montana)
Owen posted a three-goal week for Wesleyan, netting both game-winners to give the Cardinals a 2-0 showing. On Wednesday Owen scored twice, including the decisive goal with only 1:27 remaining for a 3-2 victory. He scored the first goal of Saturday's match against NESCAC foe Trinity, which proved to be all the offense the Cardinals needed in a 2-0 shutout of the Bantams.

Taylor Downs, Amherst
(Sophomore, Midfield - Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.)
Downs notched a pair of goals in a 2-0 weekend for Amherst. Downs netted the game-winner in Saturday's 1-0 NESCAC victory over Trinity, followed Sunday with the game-tying goal in a 2-1 decision over Roger Williams.
