Middlebury Wins NESCAC Golf Championship

Middlebury College, the 2011 NESCAC Golf Champions BRANDON, Vt. – Middlebury won the 2011 NESCAC Golf Championship on Sunday at the Neshobe Golf Club in Brandon, Vt. The Panthers shaved 10 strokes off their day one total of 302 to finish the two-day conference championship event with a score of 594.

It is the third NESCAC crown in the past five years for Middlebury, which also earns an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament May 10-13 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

Following the Panthers at Neshobe were the 2010 NESCAC Golf Champions, Trinity, as the Bantams came in second with a two-day total of 613. Williams was two strokes back of the Bantams in third (615), while Amherst came in fourth (623).

NESCAC Player of the Year Brian Cady led Middlebury on day two, firing a one-under-par 71 on the par 72 course to finish second overall with a 148. Winning medalist honors was Middlebury's William Prince, who shot an even par 72 on day two, finishing with a 146. Jimmy Levins and Andrew Emerson each finished with a 151 to tie for fourth place and round out Middlebury's scorers. Alex Bermingham of Trinity finished the tourney in third place with a 150, followed by teammate Jack Palley in sixth with a 152.

Middlebury Wins Golf Fall Qualifier - Panthers Will Host Spring Championship

BERLIN, Conn. – Middlebury College used a pair of stellar rounds over two days to win the NESCAC Golf Fall Qualifier on Sunday afternoon at Shuttle Meadow Country Club. Tied for first with Williams following day one, the Panthers turned in an impressive day two total of 290 for a two-day total of 585, 12 strokes ahead of the second place Ephs. Leading Middlebury on the links was senior Brian Cady (Rye, N.Y.), who earned medalist honors with an even-par performance of 142.

The victory guarantees the Panthers the right to host the Spring Championship round on April 30 and May 1, more than likely at Ralph Myhre Golf Course on the Middlebury campus.

Joining Middlebury and Williams at the NESCAC Championship will be defending conference champion Trinity and Amherst. The Lord Jeffs finished third overall (598) and will be participating in the spring championship for the first time since the format was adopted during the 2007-08 season. The Bantams were fourth with a two-day total of 609.

Hamilton finished in fifth with a score of 620. The Continentals could not overcome a 13-stroke deficit from day one.

Trinity senior Jay Driscoll finished second among individuals with a two-day score of 143, followed by Peter Taylor, of Wesleyan, and Rob Donahoe, of Middlebury, at 144. Trip Wray, of Amherst, and Robert Camp, of Williams tied for fifth at 145.  Donahoe led the field after Saturday’s play with a 69, before shooting a 75 today.
