2008 Field Hockey Players of the Week

November 10, 2008
Kara Kelley, Bowdoin
(Junior, Defender - Dedham, Mass.)
Kelley scored what proved to be the only goal in Sunday’s final of the 2008 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship, propelling the Polar Bears past Tufts 1-0 for their fourth-consecutive title. The goal was the second of the season for Kelley. She also provided a defensive save in Saturday’s 4-0 semifinal victory over Middlebury, as Bowdoin did not allow a goal in either game over the weekend.

Chase Delano, Middlebury
(Sophomore, Forward - Greenwich, Conn.)
Delano had five goals - including two game-winners - and an assist during the Panthers’ 3-0 week. On Wednesday at Rensselaer, Delano had the game’s first goal in a 2-0 victory. Saturday evening at Williams, Delano tallied the game-tying goal before assisting on the eventual winner in double-overtime in a 3-2 victory. She scored both Middlebury goals during Sunday’s 2-1 quarterfinal win over the Ephs. Delano now has 23 goals on the season, tying the program’s single-season record.

Tamara Brown, Tufts
(Sophomore, F/M - Annandale, Va.)
Brown tallied both of Tufts’ goals in a 2-1 overtime victory at Trinity on Saturday to keep the Jumbos in first place in the conference. Brown had the first goal of the game late in the first half to put Tufts up 1-0. After Trinity tied the contest with a goal off a penalty corner at the end of regulation, she scored the decisive goal 2:22 into overtime for the win. Brown now has 17 goals through 12 games, one goal shy of the program single-season record.

Christine Mwatarura, Trinity
(Senior, Midfielder - Helensvale, Zimbabwe)
Mwatarura scored both Bantam goals in a 2-0 road win at Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. The victory marked the first win for Trinity against Bowdoin since 1997 and snapped the Polar Bears’ 31-game winning streak and their 39-game home winning streak. Mwatarura now has three goals and an assist through 10 outings.

Molly Malloy, Amherst
(Junior, Forward - Stamford, Conn.)
Malloy had five goals and an assist during a 2-0 week for the Jeffs. After scoring three times in a 9-0 win at WNEC on Thursday, Malloy had a hand in all three of Amherst’s goals during a 3-1 win over Colby as she assisted on the game-winner before scoring twice later on in the contest. The 11 points were the first of the season for Malloy, who now ranks second among her teammates in scoring.

Abby Hine, Connecticut College
(Sophomore, Forward - Madison, Conn.)
Hine provided all of the scoring for the Camels during a 1-1 week. She tallied a hat trick in a 3-2 win at Wellesley on Wednesday evening before scoring Connecticut College’s lone goal in a 2-1 setback at Bates on Saturday. Hine, who has now collected five goals over her last three games, leads the Camels with six goals and 12 points through eight appearances this season.

Chase Delano, Middlebury
(Sophomore, Forward - Greenwich, Conn.)
Delano posted three goals and an assist in the Panthers’ 7-3 victory at Colby on Saturday afternoon. With Colby leading 2-0 midway through the first half, Delano got the Middlebury offense going by assisting on her team’s first goal, then scored back-to-back goals in the closing moments of the half to put the Panthers up 3-2 at the break. Delano later added an insurance marker midway through the second half. She leads her club with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points this season.

Karli Del Rossi, Trinity
(Senior, Forward - Mantua, N.J.)
Del Rossi had four goals during a 2-0 week for Trinity, which improved to 5-0 this season. On Wednesday afternoon Del Rossi had two goals in the Bantams’ 4-1 victory over previously-unbeaten UMass Dartmouth. She tallied two more goals on Saturday to help Trinity earn a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Colby, as Del Rossi’s two goals tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2. Del Rossi is second in the NESCAC in scoring with 11 goals and an assist through five games.

Tamara Brown, Tufts
(Sophomore Forward/Midfielder - Annandale, Va.)
Brown scored four goals over two games last week, as the Jumbos’ offense continued its torrid start to the season. Saturday afternoon against Colby, Tufts held a slim 1-0 lead at halftime before Brown broke open the game with three consecutive goals en route to a 5-0 win. Earlier in the week against Wellesley, Brown contributed a goal in a 6-1 Jumbo victory that snapped a three-game losing streak to the Blue.
   
Breen McDonald, Wesleyan
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Shaker Heights, Ohio)
McDonald posted a career-high 18 saves during a 1-0 setback to Bowdoin on Saturday. McDonald kept the defending NESCAC and NCAA champion Polar Bears off the scoreboard though the first 69 minutes of the contest before allowing the game’s only goal with 13 seconds remaining.

Lindsay McNamara, Bowdoin
(Senior, Forward - Milton, Mass.)
The 2007 NESCAC Player of the Year scored eight of the Polar Bears’ 10 goals during two shutout victories on the first weekend of play. After collecting a hat trick on Saturday in a 4-0 win over Wellesley, McNamara tied the program record for goals in a game with five in a 6-0 decision over Wheaton. McNamara, the all-time leading scorer in Bowdoin history, now has 68 career goals.
