Joey Lye, Williams College

A leader, a friend, a great teammate, a captain, a hard worker, a tough-as-nails athlete. An all-star.

All of the above descriptions fit Joey Lye to a tee. The four-year letterwinner in both softball and ice hockey at Williams College garnered all kinds of awards during her time on the ice and in the field – including the 2009 NESCAC Player of the Year in softball and a spot on the conference’s All-Sportsmanship team in both sports.

During her senior year, Lye was named a co-captain for women’s hockey and was considered one of the team leaders of the softball team. On the field, she brought her games to a new level, especially in softball, where she led all of Division III in batting average with a .563 mark. That average broke the Williams record for a single-season, of which she holds four, including stolen bases (22), which she also set this season.

Lye was selected as the ECAC 2009 Division III New England Player of the Year. She was also named the NFCA's New England Region First Team as an at-large selection and as the NESCAC Player of the Year. She was also a New England Softball Coaches Association First Team selection.

Before she finished her career in May, the Ephs' shortstop set five career records at Williams and finished among the top 10 in 11 different offensive categories.

In 2009, Lye led the Ephs in runs scored (43), hits (63), total bases (73), walks (13), on-base percentage (.608), and assists (74) as well as the aforementioned batting average and stolen bases. She finished her career as the all-time leader in batting average (.457), runs scored (150), hits (211), total bases (267) and stolen bases (62). That in 148 games played, third best all-time.

For most of her Eph ice hockey career Lye played on the blue line, appearing in 100 games, netting 18 goals and registering 23 assists for 41 total points.

Lye was an All-American in softball during her junior season. She was an all-conference selection for times in softball and once in women’s hockey.

Lye appeared in the May 25, 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated in the "Faces in the Crowd" section. Lye is the 25th Eph athlete to appear in "Faces in the Crowd" since August of 1989 and the first softball player. She graduated from Williams with a degree in psychology and will spend the upcoming year as an assistant coach with the softball team.
